Graphic Of Man And Woman Learning To Slow Down

Six self-treats to slow down and come back to yourself

We’re quick to notice when children need a break—whether it’s a sudden burst of tears or just a case of crankiness. But as adults, we often get so used to pushing through our own need for rest that we forget what it feels like to pause. Caregiving, work, grocery shopping, meal prep, catching up with friends, going to the gym—it’s a never-ending list of responsibilities, slightly different for each of us.

And yet, we wonder why we’re so exhausted! Let’s take a moment to laugh at the irony: of course, we’re tired! Anyone would be, with the packed schedules we create for ourselves. The gentle truth is that it can be surprisingly hard to sit with ourselves long enough to recognize what we truly need.

As the days grow shorter and the holiday season looms, I invite you to slow down and reconnect with your life by trying these seven simple self-care ideas.

1. Focus on the quality of your relationships
We all have relationships that need love and attention to thrive, but the pressure to keep up with everyone can sometimes feel overwhelming. On days when you’re especially tired, give yourself permission to say no to plans, cancel a dinner outing, or opt out of a volunteer activity. These small acts of rest can remind you that you have control over your time—and that it’s okay to choose yourself.

2. Treat yourself to sleep
Consider creating a bedtime routine, much like the ones many of us were lovingly taught as children (or perhaps wished we had been). Sleep hygiene can be a way to nurture your younger self with the wisdom of your adult self. Journaling about how better sleep impacts your energy and mood might reveal the power of this gentle act of self-care.

3. Take a break from devices
Balancing the need to stay informed with the need to be present can feel tricky. Try setting limits on news and social media use—for instance, checking in only 2–3 times a day for a set amount of time. Experiment to find what works best for you and notice how stepping away impacts your sense of calm.

4. Practice mindful eating or mini-meditation
Mindful moments—like paying attention to the taste and texture of your food or practicing a quick three-minute meditation—can feel like mini-vacations from the busyness of life. These practices help you tune into your body, notice your emotions, and reconnect with the present moment. Just a few deep breaths can make all the difference.

5. Create a calming space
Your environment can greatly impact your sense of peace. Consider small changes that create calm: adding an indoor plant, tidying up a shared space, or even repainting your bedroom. These changes remind you of the agency you have in shaping your surroundings—and your day-to-day life.

6. Reflect on your values and goals
It’s easy to get consumed by goals—launching that new website, landing the promotion, or supporting our kids’ latest ambitions. But have you stopped to ask if those goals align with your values? It’s okay to let go of goals that no longer serve you and redirect your energy toward things that truly bring you joy and meaning.

Each of these small, intentional acts can help you slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with yourself. You are also deserving of the kindness and care that you extend to others every day.
